Marshalltown Strikes Last in Shootout

After years of coming up just short for the last six seasons, Marshalltown is returning to the NJCAA Men's Soccer National Tournament in Daytona, Fla. After winning the regular season crown the Tigers found dramatic ways to reach the National Tournament.

In the Region XI Tournament, the Tigers found themselves in a nil-nil match and in overtime against Iowa Lakes. Six minutes in, Marshalltown, off the foot of Rafael Vacas, was able to score the game-winning goal to send them onto the next round.

The District Championship on Saturday against Morton provided even more drama for the seemingly destined Tigers. Trailing 1-0 with less than a minute to go, Alex Viladot used his head with 18-seconds left to tie the game and head to another period of extra time. After two 10 minutes periods passed, there was still no winner. The game move to penalty kicks and thanks to a save from Joel Serrano, Tiger goalkeeper, Marshalltown won the match 5-3.
