ICCAC Division II Volleyball selected the 2019 All-Conference and All-Region teams after another competitive season. Iowa Central won their second straight regular-season title finishing 8-1. Over the past two seasons, the Tritons are 17-1 in conference matches. NIACC made a huge push this season, finishing second in the conference and host of the Region XI-B Tournament. Since 2012, their best finish prior to this season was fifth.
Then, in Regional Tournament play, Northeast powered their way through another Region XI Tournament to reach their fourth consecutive NJCAA Tournament, and Kirkwood upset No. 1 seed Iowa Central for the second straight year to advance to the North Central-B District Championship.
On Thursday, eight members were recognized to ICCAC First Team All-Conference. Iowa Central, Kirkwood and NIACC led the way with two selections each while DMACC and Northeast added players of their own.
The top-seeded Tritons boasted power hitters, Amaya Finley and Kealey Anderson. Finley, voted as the 2019 ICCAC Division II Volleyball Player of the Year, was a premier scorer in the conference. She finished with 126 kills, 3.94 per set in conference play, third-best in the league in both categories. Overall, she leads the league in kills (585) and kills per set (4.03). Finley broke the team record for career kills and finished her career with 1116.
Anderson, the 2019 ICCAC Freshman of the Year, ranked right behind Finley in both categories. She had 121 kills in conference play averaging 3.78 per set in nine matches. Overall, she was third in total kills (556) and second in kills per set (3.92) amongst ICCAC players. If she continues her pace, she may be able to break Finley's record next season, as she finished with 581 kills, 50 ahead of Finley after their freshman seasons.
After leading the Tritons to another regular-season title, head coach Sara Horn was voted as the 2019 ICCAC Coach of the Year. It was the third time in seven seasons the Tritons have reached the 30-win plateau under Horn. In her tenure, she has an overall record of 192-99 and is 45-15 in conference.
From NIACC were sophomore outside hitter Kennedy Meister and freshman setter Becca Steffen. The combination of the two helped NIACC to unprecedented team success in 2019. Meister finished with the second-most kills (134) and kills per set (4.06) during conference play. After her two seasons, she is the Trojans all-time leader in kills (989) and digs (1146).
Steffen had 201 assists and 108 digs from her setter position. She also led the conference with 29 aces in conference play.
Northeast's freshman libero Josie Sanger took home First Team All-Conference honors. She led the Hawks defense with 204 digs in ICCAC play, 5.83 per set. On the season she has 774 heading into the National Tournament on Nov. 21-23 in West Virginia. Sanger came up big in the biggest matches. Against NIACC in the Region XI-B Championship, she finished with 13 assists and a season-high 43 digs.
Kirkwood was led in 2019 by two players from the attack zone. Sophomore middle blocker Taylor Carey and freshman outside hitter Anna Gorsich led the Eagles to another Region title in 2019. Carey was top-three in the conference in blocks with 39 total. She was paired with Gorsich, the 2019 Region XI-A Tournament MVP, who led the Eagles attack with 101 kills in ICCAC play.
Rounding out the first team was DMACC's, Amber Dilsaver. A 2018 First Team All-Conference selection as well, Dilsaver led the ICCAC in kills during conference play with 147. She was also top 10 in blocks with 26.
All-Region selections each year are based on the finish of each school in the conference standings, and their respective regional tournament pairings. In 2019, Region XI-A was comprised of Iowa Central, Kirkwood, DMACC, Iowa Lakes and Southwestern, while Region XI-B grouped NIACC, Northeast, Hawkeye, Southeastern, and Ellsworth.
From Region XI-A Dilsaver, Finley, Anderson Gorsich and Carey were joined on First Team by Katelyn Courtney of DMACC. XI-B feature Meister, Steffen, and Sanger, along with Hawkeye's Haylee Keune, Northeast's Elley Beaver and Southeastern's Rachel Bingham.
