Spencer Cuvelier Selected as ICCAC Male Student-Athlete of the Year
Spencer led his Triton football team in tackles, assisted tackled, total tackles, tackles per game, and tackles for loss.
The ICCAC Student-Athlete of the Year award is in its second year while becoming a highly prestigious accolade designated to highlight the best of the best in the premier conference of the NJCAA. Nominations were received by the ICCAC Awards Committee, comprised of select athletic directors from across the conference. Those nominations were then narrowed to a select three student-athletes that embodied the best characteristics that the ICCAC offers not just on the court or field, but also for what they accomplish in the classroom and contribute back to their school and community.
Iowa Central's own Spencer Cuvelier represented the Tritons in becoming the second ICCAC Male Student-Athlete of the Year in 2018-19. Spencer led the Triton football team in tackles. He led them in assisted tackles, in total tackles, in tackles per game, and in tackles for loss. Safe to say he was a force to reckon with all over the field, dominating the defensive side of the ball. All those tackles totaling up to 96, placed Cuvelier ninth in the nation and fifth in the nation in tackles for loss at 22.
Iowa Central's head football coach, Jesse Montalto, referred to Cuvelier as the "difference maker" in his recruiting class.
Cuvelier was the Triton's captain and finished his redshirt freshman season with a team record of 8-4, ending their season on a six-game winning streak including a resounding win in the Graphic Edge Bowl, 34-20 against Monroe College. Their eight wins in 2018 was a seven-win turnaround from 2017 when Iowa Central won just one game all season.
Not only was Cuvelier making an impact on the football field, but outside the lines as well. He was very active in his football squad's mentoring program with the Butler Elementary School students. Along with helping the younger generation, he was heavily involved in Fort Dodge's Catholic Church System.
Spencer Cuvelier landed in Cedar Falls with the Panthers and will join the Northern Iowa Football team this coming fall.
He was quoted as saying, "It's going well, I have a lot to learn before fall, but I'm excited for every step."
