DMACC's Guy Receives ICCAC's Male Student-Athlete of the Year Award
DMACC's Willie Guy was named the Iowa Community College Athletic Conference's 2020-21 Male Student-Athlete of the Year on Wednesday.
After leading the Bears to an ICCAC Region XI Championship in 2019-20, the national tournament was canceled due to COVID, thwarting their opportunity for DMACC, seeded No. 2, a chance to make a tournament run. Fast forward to the spring 2021, and DMACC repeated as the ICCAC regular season conference champion, and again, earned the No. 2 seed at the 2021 NJCAA Division II National Tournament.
Led by Guy, the Bears rallied to win four games and win the school's first-ever men's basketball national championship. Guy was awarded the Tournament MVP after averaging 15.3 points, 8.5 assists and 5 rebounds in four contests.
During the regular season, Guy led the Bears in scoring at 13 points per game in 26 games. He was third in the nation with 166 assists, averaging 6.4 per game. Guy was tagged as the ICCAC Division II Men's Basketball Player of the Year, an NJCAA First Team All-American and came one vote shy of being named NJCAA Division II Men's Basketball Player of the Year.
Off the floor, Guy has been involved on campus and in the Boone community in numerous ways, assisting at school and youth athletic events and reading to kids at local elementaries.
"For two years, Willie has been a face of our program on and off the floor," DMACC athletic director BJ McGinn said. "The work he has done with youth in Boone as well as his community back home is admirable. Obviously his play speaks for itself but he has represented himself in a first class manner on and off the floor. We're proud of all the things he's accomplished as a player and a young man."
Next fall, Guy has signed with NCAA Division I North Dakota State University to continue his collegiate career.
Now in its fourth year, Guy becomes the first Bear to win the award, joining Iowa Lakes' Justin Brookens, Iowa Central's Spencer Cuvelier and Ellsworth's Justin Folley as the ICCAC Male Student-Athlete of the Year.
Nominations were received by the ICCAC Awards Committee, composed of select athletic directors from across the conference. Those nominations were then narrowed to a select three student-athletes that embodied the best characteristics that the ICCAC offers not just on the court or field, but also for what they accomplish in the classroom and contribute back to their school and community.
