Reivers Rally to Third Title in Four Years
CANYON, Texas — The Iowa Western Reivers (12-1, 2-0) rallied from an early deficit to beat defending national champion Hutchinson (11-1, 6-0) 28-10 in the 2025 NJCAA Division I Football National Championship, securing their third national title in the last four seasons.
Hutchinson set the early tone, marching downfield on its opening drive when Christian Johnson found Derrick Salley Jr. for a 15-yard touchdown. Alejandro de la Poza followed with a 52-yard field goal to make it 10-0 midway through the first quarter. The Blue Dragons held that lead into the second quarter.
From there, Iowa Western took command defensively and after trailing 10-0 in the first quarter, the Reivers scored 28 unanswered points over the final three quarters.
The momentum shifted late in the first half. Iowa Western quarterback Malachi Marshall connected with DeAndre Horn for a 9-yard touchdown, and on the following drive, Marshall found Tre Brown for a 20-yard score to give the Reivers a 14-10 halftime lead.
In the third quarter, Marshall added a 23-yard touchdown pass to Cyrus Courtney. Then, Daniel Swinney capped a decisive 10-play, 68-yard drive with a 6-yard rushing touchdown in the fourth quarter, extending the lead to 28-10 and sealing the title.
Swinney was named the game's most valuable player after rushing for 153 yards on 21 carries and a touchdown. He did it against a defense that had allowed just over 50 yards per game on the ground through its first 11 games this season.
Marshall finished 18 of 35 for 212 yards and three touchdowns. Courtney led the receiving corps with five catches for 65 yards and a touchdown.
Defensively, Jeremy Lewis recorded 2.5 of Iowa Western's nine sacks, and Andy Burburija added two. Lewis also forced and recovered a fumble for the Reivers' lone takeaway.
Impressively Iowa Western held Hutchinson's offense to just 159 total yards — 89 passing and 70 rushing.
The win snapped a four-game losing streak against the Blue Dragons, including a loss earlier in the 2025 regular season and a 2024 defeat in the NJCAA National Championship game.
