2021 All-Region Teams Announced for DII Men's Basketball
The ICCAC announced the 2021 postseason awards for Division II Men's Basketball on Monday. Six of the eight teams were represented on this year's First Team selections.
Earning 2021 Player of the Year honors was sophomore guard Willie Guy from DMACC.
A native of Cedar Rapids, Guy averaged 12.3 points, 5 rebounds, and 6 assists per game. As a scorer, Guy was ranked in the top 20, not just at the DII level. He also led the conference in assists per game and was top 10 in assists/turnover ratio (2.4).
Guy was a unanimous selection by the coaches for Player of the Year. The Bears won the 2021 Region XI-A Championship as the ICCAC Division II regular season champions for the second straight season with Guy as their floor general.
With the Bears success, first-year head coach Brett Putz was named the 2021 Division II Coach of the Year. Putz led the Bears to the Division II regular season title with a record of 17-4. The Bears were ranked all season and held the No. 1 ranking for three weeks.
Most notably, DMACC had a memorable week in March. They went on the road in back-to-back games and beat both Indian Hills and Southeastern.
DMACC earned one more selection in addition to Guy on First Team. Sophomore center Ryan Schmitt was a force again in 2021 in the post. A Second Team selection in 2020, Schmitt averaged 11.9 points and 6.4 rebounds per game while shooting 52% from the field.
The only other team that had multiple selections was Kirkwood, who was represented by sophomores Corvon Seales and Blake Brinkmeyer.
Seales led the Eagles in scoring averaging 12.7 points per game on 52% shooting. He averaged 3.7 rebounds and 2.5 assists in league play. Brinkmeyer scored 11 points per game but did a majority of his work on the defensive end. He was top five in defensive rebounds (113), and blocks (33).
Four other schools had representation on First Team; Iowa Lakes, Iowa Western, NIACC, and Southwestern.
Xzavier Jones, the sophomore guard from Iowa Lakes was a top ten scorer at 13.8 points per game. He was tops in among Division II ICCAC players in rebounding with 7.7 per game and eighth among all ICCAC players in assists at 3.4 per game. Jones and the Lakers won the Region XI Tournament title and advanced to their first NJCAA Tournament since 2013. He was named to the All-Tournament team.
Iowa Western's DeWayne Vass was the only freshman on the First Team. The Reivers leading scorer averaged 13.3 points and 3.1 assists per game while shooting 40.9% from three. He was top 10 in the ICCAC in free throw percentage (78.3) and steals (33).
NIACC's McKelary Robertson was one of the best scorers and shooters in the conference. His 18.1 points per game was fifth-best in ICCAC play and third-best among Division II players. Robertson was top-five in both three-pointers made (56) and free throws made (85).
Rounding out the First Team was Southwestern's James Kelley. The Spartan sophomore averaged 14.3 points and 6.6 rebounds per game in ICCAC competition. He was two thirds of the way to reaching the 50-40-90 Club as he shot 53.1% from the field and from three, 40%.
Kelly joins Guy and Schmitt as 2020 Second Team All-Region selections to make First Team in 2021.
The 2021 ICCAC Division II Basketball All-Region teams were selected by the head coaches, who were not allowed to vote for their own players.
