Iowa Western's Title Defense Comes To An End
DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. — Iowa Western entered the NJCAA National Tournament as the reigning national champion and the Midwest District winner, but the No. 2–seeded Reivers saw their title defense end earlier than hoped after two losses in Pool C.
Iowa Western opened tournament play with a 2–1 upset loss to Otero College. After falling behind early, the Reivers equalized on a first-half goal by Yamato Urakami, assisted by Nathan Karanganwa, but were unable to find a second goal to pull level again.
Looking to rebound in Game 2, the Reivers faced Mohave, which had already defeated Otero to sit atop the group. Iowa Western's backline held strong for much of the match, but the offense could not convert its chances. Two late goals from Mohave sealed a 2–0 defeat and eliminated the Reivers from semifinal contention.
Iowa Western concluded its national tournament run in pool play, finishing the season with a 13-3-5 record after capturing both the Region 11 and Midwest District titles. At the event's conclusion, the Reivers were honored with the tournament's Sportsmanship Award.
