Iowa Western Sweeps Their Way to Third Consecutive Region Crown
Iowa Western took home its third straight Region 11 title this weekend after a dominant four-game stretch.
The Region 11 tournament featured two best-of-three semifinal series, with the winners advancing to a best-of-three championship series.
In game one, No. 1 seed Iowa Western blitzed Marshalltown 21-0. Kennedy Borud led the charge with two home runs and four RBIs, while Kiana LeDoux, Kamira Botos and Harlee Fowler all hit home runs. Pitchers Saydee Plummer and Payton Smith combined for five innings, allowing three hits and no runs while striking out five.
Game two was more of the same for the Reivers. LeDoux homered again as Iowa Western dominated in a 10-0 victory. Taylin Tabor wreaked havoc on the basepaths with five stolen bases. Pitchers Logan Brown and Kyla Parker combined for six innings, allowing six hits and no runs while striking out one.
In the other semifinal, No. 2 seed Southeastern took care of business against No. 3 seed Indian Hills. In game one, Indian Hills jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first before Southeastern answered with two runs of its own in the second inning. With the game tied at 2 in the bottom of the sixth, Jaimee Bolduc hit a two-run home run to give Southeastern a timely 4-2 win. Blackhawks pitcher Araceli Rivas had a strong outing, pitching 6 2/3 innings while allowing three hits and two runs and striking out eight.
The Blackhawks carried the momentum from Bolduc's home run into game two. Southeastern third baseman Logan Kelley was the story of the day, hitting three home runs en route to a 12-5 win. Her offensive outburst led the Blackhawks into the championship series against Iowa Western.
Iowa Western had gone 3-1 against Southeastern in the regular season and got another chance at the Blackhawks in the Region 11 championship series. In game one, the Reivers were led by a strong offensive performance from Borud, who had three of Iowa Western's four RBIs. Plummer was lights out in the circle, pitching seven innings and allowing just two runs.
Game two was a nail-biter to the very end. Southeastern jumped out to a quick 3-0 lead behind Jeliane Stewart's double in the second inning and run-scoring hits from Anna Woods and Bolduc in the third. Iowa Western's offense woke up in the third behind Botos' RBI double, which helped cut the lead to 3-2.
Borud continued her power stroke with a home run in the fifth inning to tie the game at 3, followed by an Amelia Ehlert double that gave the Reivers a 4-3 lead. Kelley also continued her strong hitting, tying the game at 4 in the top of the seventh before a single by Woods put the Blackhawks up 5-4 with a chance to win the game in the bottom half of the inning.
With the Reivers down by one, Briannah Kutschkau stepped to the plate and delivered the swing of the season for Iowa Western. She blasted a two-run home run to walk it off and send the Reivers to the Midwest District Championship for the third season in a row.
Iowa Western will take on Jefferson (Mo.), the Region 16 champion, this weekend with a chance to advance to the NJCAA World Series.
