A highly anticipated top-15 matchup between No. 14 NIACC and No. 5 Kirkwood fully lived up to the hype.
The Trojans traveled to Johnson Hall and earned a massive ICCAC victory, snapping a 13-game losing streak to the Eagles and ending Kirkwood's 85-game home winning streak.
The result may have seemed improbable to many, but not to those who have watched NIACC surge in the new year. Since Jan. 3, the Trojans have outscored opponents by 125 points during an eight-game winning streak. A major catalyst has been sophomore Reggi Spotts, who delivered another standout performance, tying her career high with 29 points while adding six rebounds. Freshmen Zaria Falls and Ciara Seifert also played key roles, combining for 22 points and 14 rebounds.
On the other side, Kirkwood matched NIACC shot for shot, relying on a balanced offensive attack and steady defensive pressure. The Eagles played a strong game in front of their home crowd but were unable to close it out in overtime. NIACC capitalized on key possessions in the extra period to seal the win. Olivia Wren led Kirkwood with 13 points, while Kennedy Blakely contributed 12 points, seven rebounds and three assists. Off the bench, Claire Hudson provided a spark, knocking down three 3-pointers.
NIACC will next host Southeastern in Mason City on Wednesday, Jan. 28, at 5:30 p.m.
Kirkwood returns to the road Thursday, Jan. 29, traveling to Creston, Iowa, to face Southwestern CC at 5:30 p.m.
