Game of the Week: DMACC def. #17 Iowa Lakes, 68-63

After beginning 2026 with a six-game losing streak, DMACC has turned its season around in a big way. The Bears answered that skid with a six-game winning streak, capped by their biggest victory of the season — a win over No. 17 Iowa Lakes that knocked the Lakers out of the national rankings. DMACC fell to Iowa Lakes earlier this season by a score of 69–61, but Saturday's rematch made it clear this is a very different Bears team. This time, DMACC delivered a complete performance and held off a late charge to earn a 68–63 victory in Estherville.

The Bears set the tone early, taking a 22–17 lead after the first quarter and extending the margin to 33–31 by halftime. DMACC continued to apply pressure coming out of the break, outscoring the Lakers 19–11 in the third quarter to build momentum heading into the final period. That momentum peaked midway through the fourth quarter, when DMACC stretched its lead to 60–44 with 7:37 remaining. The Bears were in control on both ends of the floor, using disciplined defense and timely scoring to keep Iowa Lakes at bay.

However, Iowa Lakes took just six minutes to storm back into the game, trimming the lead to one point at 64–63 with just over a minute to play. DMACC answered the challenge, closing the game at the free-throw line and coming up with key defensive stops down the stretch to preserve the 68–63 win.

Sophomore Chloe Costello led all scorers with a standout performance, pouring in 28 points on 9-of-17 shooting while knocking down four 3-pointers. Whitney Jensen added a strong all-around effort with 10 points, eight rebounds, three blocks and two steals. Mariam Omran provided a boost off the bench with 13 points and eight rebounds, while Breeley Clayburg anchored the interior with seven rebounds. Defensively, the Bears applied consistent pressure throughout the game, forcing contested looks and physical drives that disrupted Iowa Lakes' rhythm. That pressure carried over to the free-throw line, where the Lakers struggled to find consistency, shooting under 50 percent from the stripe.

Iowa Lakes still saw several players step up despite the loss. Tavara Swonger led the Lakers with 14 points while adding four rebounds and four steals, providing energy on both ends of the floor off the bench. Tahlea Tirrell also chipped in 12 points off the bench, knocking down a pair of 3-pointers, while Makyia Kenney contributed eight points, three assists and three steals as the Lakers continued to battle until the final horn.

DMACC's momentum could not be coming at a better time, as the Bears will take on No. 9 NIACC on Feb. 11 at 5:30 p.m.

Iowa Lakes will attempt to complete its season sweep of Iowa Western on Feb. 11 at 5:30 p.m. in Council Bluffs.
