NIACC Advances to First NJCAA Tournament Since 2020
To kick off the Region 11-B bracket, No. 2 NIACC and No. 7 Iowa Western met with a trip to the regional title game on the line, and the Trojans used a dominant second quarter to seize control and never look back. Iowa Western led 18-15 after the opening quarter, but NIACC responded by outscoring the Reivers 29-12 in the second to take a 44-30 halftime lead. Reggi Spotts headlined the win for NIACC with a career-high-tying 30 points, while Zaria Falls added 11 points and made her presence felt on both ends with four rebounds and three blocks, and Taylor Hemann chipped in nine points off the bench. Iowa Western was paced by Sydney Donaldson, who scored 22 points, and Aniyah Howard, who finished with 11 points and a game-high 10 rebounds, but the Reivers could not overcome NIACC's big first-half surge as the Trojans secured the 74-59 victory and advanced to the regional championship game for the third straight season.
On the other side of the bracket, No. 6 Northeast went on the road to knock off No. 3 Iowa Lakes, 66-56, in Estherville and punch its ticket to the Region 11-B Championship game. The Hawks came out firing and jumped ahead early, leading 18-11 after the first quarter before extending that advantage with a 21-16 second period to take a 39-27 lead into halftime. Northeast stayed in control throughout the second half, outscoring the Lakers 14-10 in the third quarter before Iowa Lakes made a late push in the fourth. Aaliyah Jones turned in a huge all-around performance for the Hawks with 15 points, 13 rebounds, four assists and four steals, while Ayana Owens matched her with 15 points and Jana Lopez added 10. Iowa Lakes was led by Tahlea Tirrell with 12 points, while Makyia Kenney pulled down nine rebounds, but the Lakers could not overcome Northeast's strong start as the Hawks advanced to the regional title game against NIACC.
In the championship game, No. 2 NIACC and No. 6 Northeast battled through a tight first half before the Trojans took over after the break and punched their ticket to nationals. NIACC led 14-5 after the first quarter, but Northeast answered in the second, going on an 18-6 run to carry a 23-20 lead into halftime as the Trojans struggled to find their rhythm offensively, shooting just 4-of-29 from the field in the first half. NIACC came out of the locker room with a completely different energy, exploding for 32 points in the third quarter to flip the game and seize a 52-45 advantage behind another huge performance from Reggi Spotts. The Trojans kept control in the fourth, outscoring the Hawks 17-10 to secure the 69-55 win and claim their second straight Region 11-B title. Spotts led the way with 26 points, nine rebounds, six assists and four steals, while Ciara Seifert added a double-double with 13 points and 12 rebounds, and Peyton Meincke chipped in 12 points. Zaria Falls also made an impact with nine points and 10 rebounds. Northeast was led by Aaliyah Jones with 20 points and eight rebounds, while Aweng Akoi finished with 18 points and 12 rebounds, but the Hawks could not keep pace with NIACC's second-half surge as the Trojans advanced to the national tournament for the 11th time in program history. This will be the Trojans' first appearance since 2020, when they earned the No. 1 seed only to have the tournament canceled due to COVID.
