DMACC Fends Off NIACC for Second Straight District Title
ANKENY, Iowa - Des Moines Area Community College (DMACC) secured its second straight North Plains District title on Tuesday at Otter Creek Golf Course in Ankeny. DMACC finished the tournament with a score of +97 across two rounds.
Leading the charge for the Bears was Megan Wilde and Hannah Kenkel -- finishing in second and third, respectively. Wilde fired a 157 (+15) during the tournament with a birdie and 22 pars. Kenkel shot a 158 (+16) with four birdies and 15 pars.
Despite placing in second out of the ICCAC, North Iowa Area Community College golfer Megan DeLong finished in first place after three playoff holes against Wilde. They recorded pars on the first two playoff holes before DeLong outlasted Wilde on the third playoff hole for the individual championship. DeLong ended the tournament with a 157 (+15). It's the 10th time she has won a tournament in her NIACC career.
NIACC finished the tourney with a score of +109 across the two rounds while four Trojan golfers finished in the top 10.
Iowa Central finished in third place with a score of +130 during the tournament. The Tritons trio of Okira Quintero, Laiba Shah, and Azul Orantes all finished tied for fourth, but to determine the NJCAA National Tournament qualifiers the three golfers had to compete in a playoff. Quintero punched her ticket first after being the only one to par the second playoff hole. Then, Shah secured her spot as well on the third playoff hole.
Other notable finishers outside of the top five were NIACC's Audrey Overgaard (7th), Addy Bell (T8) and Avery Knutsen (T10). DMACC saw Isabella Ross (T10), Haley Loonan (T12) and Sydney Helgeson (T12) all finish strong.
With top two team finishes at the tournament, DMACC and NIACC will advance to the NJCAA Division II National Championships on May 12-15 in Tuscaloosa, Ala.
